Georgia Military takes two from Lady Tigers
The South Georgia College Lady Tigers’ quest for a second
consecutive state title began with a rocky start Friday at Georgia Military
in Milledgeville.
The Lady Tigers lost a double-header 8-0 and 14-3 to a more experienced and
relaxed Georgia Military team. One hurdle Coach Rob Brunel and his team will
have to overcome this season is inexperience. The Lady Tigers are talented
but young, and that youth showed up in game one and wouldn’t go away. “It
was a case of first game jitters that stayed all day,” said Coach Brunel.
The Lady Tigers, normally a very sound defensive team, had trouble with
routine ground balls and fly balls, and missed easy throws. Not getting on
the scoreboard early in game one didn’t help, either. The Lady Tigers’ woes
were compounded by Georgia Military, a good hitting team that has already
played six or seven games this season.
There were a few bright spots. Sophomore Crystal Greer played well. She was
1 for 2 in game one and 2 for 3 in game two with a pair of runs scored. “She
hit the ball well. She wasn’t tense at all,” said Coach Brunel. Another
sophomore, Megan Hartley, was 1 for 3 in game two and drove in all three
runs. Catcher Brandy Evans, who also played last year, looked good as well.
Freshman pitcher Jessica Cooper had a good inning and a half on the mound.
“Georgia Military put some pressure on us, and we’ve got to get used to
playing at this level,” said Coach Brunel.
After the Georgia Military games, SGC drove to Dothan, Ala., for a
tournament. However, the weekend games were cancelled due to rain.
Things don’t get any easier for the Lady Tigers this week. Tuesday, they
traveled to Jacksonville, Fla., to play FCCJ. This weekend, they are off to
Aiken for the annual – and competitive – Aiken tournament.
