Nine SGC students attend MESA conference

Nine members of South Georgia College’s Math, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program took a crash course in career building and job preparation at the recent MESA Leadership Conference, which took place at the Westin Hotel in Atlanta earlier this month.

SGC was one of six colleges that participated in the event. The others were Darton College, Atlanta Metropolitan, Georgia Perimeter, Tallahassee Community College and Chicago State University.

The conference focused on preparing the students for their future careers. Workshops included resume review, mock job interview, strategic steps to a 4.0 GPA, networking and team-building. Evening speakers for the conference included Gary Dahlke, a NASA engineer who designs thermal protection tiles on the space shuttle, and Connie Leggett, a mathematics professor from Albany State University.

The conference ended on the morning of Saturday, Feb. 7. When the students left the Westin, they toured the Georgia Aquarium before returning to Douglas.

“The conference was very organized, and the workshop you great. I was very honored and thankful to be able to attend such a conference. I wouldn’t mind doing it again,” said Andrew Palmer, one of the students who attended.

“This was an excellent opportunity for our MESA members to network with students from other MESA programs. They heard from people who had succeeded in all areas of business and industry, and learned a little about what it takes to start writing their own success stories. It was a very beneficial conference on many levels,” said SGC MESA interim director Marie Brooks.
