Tigers hold for win against TCC
The South Georgia College Tigers exacted a little revenge on
the Tallahassee Community College Eagles in Tallahassee on Tuesday
afternoon.
In SGC’s season opener on Jan. 30, the Eagles handily defeated the Tigers
19-6 in Douglas. Tuesday’s contest was a different story. The Tigers jumped
out front after plating two runs in the first inning and never let TCC gain
an advantage. The Eagles managed to tie the score in the fifth inning;
however, SGC scored two more in the sixth to regain the lead.
James Hickey made his first start of the season for the Tigers, and he had
an excellent outing. Hickey went five innings and allowed three runs (one
earned) on five hits. Ryan Whiddon came in for Hickey and lasted two
innings. He surrendered one earned run on three hits. Greg Fietsam and
Justin Newsome finished out the final two innings for the Tigers.
In the first inning, Stuart Drew singled with one out, keeping his
season-long hitting streak alive. Justin Roberts followed with a single.
Drew advanced to third on an Eagles’ error. Drew scored and Roberts moved to
second on a ground out by Brandon Collins. With two outs, Jamaal Smith
singled, scoring Roberts. The Eagles failed to score in the first inning,
giving SGC a 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, Zach Kilday scored on an infield single by Roberts to
increase the Tigers’ advantage to 3-0. In the bottom of the frame, the
potent Eagles line-up showed some signs of life. They used one hit, one
error and one walk to score a pair of runs.
TCC added a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at three. But
the Tigers weren’t about to let the Eagles build any momentum. In the top of
the sixth, Lee Hall and Andrew Anderson each had two-out singles to score
Collins and Keenan Ivey and put the Tigers back in front, 5-3.
SGC held a scant 5-4 lead heading into the top of the ninth. With one out,
Kilday and Drew singled. Both advanced an extra base on the throw from the
outfield on Drew’s hit. Kilday scored and Drew moved to third on a passed
ball with Justin Roberts at the plate. Roberts then hit a sacrifice fly that
scored Drew. Those two runs increased the Tigers’ lead to 7-4. The Eagles
responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the ninth when Tyler
Hibbs hit a two-out solo home run off Fietsam. After Luke Smierciak singled,
SGC coach Scott Sims sent in Justin Newsome to finish things off. Newsome
struck out Corey Franklin to give SGC a big 7-5 win over the Eagles.
Hickey picked up his first win of the season, with Newsome getting the save.
Drew went 3 for 5 with two runs scored. Roberts, Smith and Ivey had two hits
each. Roberts drove in two runs, and Kilday also scored twice.
The win moves the Tigers to 3-5 on the season. Thursday, SGC played a
double-header against the Brewton-Parker JV team in Douglas. Saturday, SGC
faces USC-Salkehatchie in a double-header beginning at 3 p.m. at Crider
Field. Sunday, the same two teams play at 1 p.m.
