Rev. Washington to headline SGC’s Dr. King Day program

Join the South Georgia College community on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 12:30 p.m. for the college’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration.

This year, Rev. Elices Ellis Washington III will serve as the program’s keynote speaker. In addition to Rev. Washington, the program will feature a musical selection by the South Georgia College Chorus and remarks from students Terrell Andrews, Catherin Ricks and Courtney Baldwin. The program will take place inside the art gallery at Peterson Hall.

The Rev. Elices Ellis Washington III, a native of Tifton who currently resides in Cordele, is the 22-year-old son of the Elder and Mrs. Ellis Washington, Jr. and the older sibling of DeSherika Sharda Washington.

Rev. Washington graduated from Tift County High with superior honors in 2004. In 2006, he graduated from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton with an Associate of Arts in political science with high honors and the seal of distinction from the Honors Program. In 2008, Rev. Washington finished undergraduate work from Georgia Southwestern State University with a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in political science with a history minor, in addition to being the first receiver of the President’s Student Leadership Award given to a graduating senior. Currently, he is enrolled in the Master of Science in Leadership program at South University located in Savannah.

During his undergraduate years, Rev. Washington served as Student Body President both at ABAC and Southwestern. He was also involved in several student organizations including Residence Life as a resident assistant, hosts and marshals, the Interdenominational Council, Mentors Offering Direction, Encouragement, and Leadership Skills, the Orientation Team, and the University Music Program.

Rev. Washington is a member of numerous academic, honorary, and social organizations including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Gamma Beta Phi Society, Gamma Beta Mu Leadership Society, Inc., National Residence Hall Honorary, Order of Omega, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, and Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society.

Currently, Rev. Washington serves as an instructor for the Americus-Sumter High School Marching Band, better known as the “Pride of Southwest Georgia.”

Finally, as of Jan. 7, 2007, Minister Washington has served as the associate pastor and the interim youth director at the Beulahland Missionary Baptist Church in Cordele, where the Rev. Chester Askins is the pastor. Rev. Washington was licensed into the ministry on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007 and was ordained on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007.
