SGC women's soccer players visit Broxton Elementary

Three members of the South Georgia College women’s soccer team visited Broxton Elementary on Wednesday, Oct. to help reinforce the importance of staying in school and getting an education.

The players – Jemilia Mathlin, Monica Reyes and Crystal Greer -- were accompanied by their coach, SGC Athletic Director Rob Brunel. Once the students had gathered in the gym for the presentation, Coach Brunel spoke to the students about his expectations as a coach at the collegiate level. The most important thing, he said, is that his players are good students. “They are students first,” he said, “and they have to make good grades.”

Coach Brunel told the Broxton students that being a college athlete was more about being a good student than being a good athlete. “If they get into trouble with their teachers, they get in trouble with me. And they don’t want that,” he said.

Coach Brunel also told the students that he requires 100 percent dedication year ‘round from his players. “They have to stay in shape all year. There is no off-season,” he said. He then turned to the players and had them perform a few footwork drills that showed off their ball-handling skills. The Broxton students were impressed with what the players could do during the drills. Coach Brunel then emphasized that the footwork drills weren’t something they did just to show off. Instead, the exercises mirrored what the players would have to do on the soccer pitch to be successful.

After wrapping up his presentation, the students asked a few questions and then spent some one-on-one time with each player. “This is the kind of activity we enjoy doing. It give the players a chance to get out in the community, and we want the kids in our local schools to know how important it is to make good grades and stay in school. If they get to talk to one of our athletes, it just might inspire them to go to college,” said Coach Brunel.
