Dr. Carson, Angel Mathis attend NACCTEP meeting in Washington

CUTLINE #1:SGC Interim President Dr. Virginia Carson, who also serves as the president of the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP), and Angel Mathis, a SGC student who serves as NACCTEP’s student board member, visited Washington, D.C., recently to attend a NACCTEP Executive Board meeting and visit with various lawmakers. One of NACCTEP’s objectives is to advocate for and represent the interests of community colleges at the national level in teacher preparation. As such, the visit to Washington gave NACCTEP members an important opportunity to discuss education issues, particularly those related to teachers and teacher preparation, with national leaders. Pictured are Dr. Carson and Angel Mathis.

CUTLINE #2:Among the leaders with which the NACCTEP delegation met were Rep. Jack Kingston (pictured above with Dr. Carson); Erin Renner, Chief Education Policy Advisor; and Tom Carroll, President of the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future. ‘A trip such as this one is important on so many levels. Our policymakers need to understand the issues facing teachers, both as they prepare for their careers and in the classroom after securing employment,’ said Dr. Carson.
