SGC honors Dr. Cottingham for 30 years of service

At a reception on Thursday, Sept. 11, Dr. Jim Cottingham, Vice President for Student Affairs at South Georgia College, was honored by members of faculty, staff and the student body for completion of 30 years of dedicated service.

"It is a great privilege to be part of the South Georgia College community. It is terrific to work with people who are dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of others. While I was touched to see our friends take the time to recognize my service, I am very much aware of the extraordinary faculty, staff, and students who make SGC such a great institution,” said Dr. Cottingham.

Dr. Cottingham may have celebrated his 30 years last week, but he has nearly spent his entire life on the SGC campus. His family moved into Davis Hall in 1958, while his father taught and was dean of students. The Cottinghams lived on campus until 1966, when most of the family moved to North Carolina. Some of the other families living on campus during those years were the Smiths, Engrams, Bowdens, Johnsons, and Buxtons.

After graduation from Coffee High School, Jim completed an associate degree from South Georgia College in 1974.

Jim returned to SGC in 1978 to serve as Counselor/Assistant Director of the Upward Bound/Special Services program. The following year he accepted an offer from Dr. Carlyle Ramsey to teach psychology and education courses for the college. He continued this until 1995, when he began his current role of Vice President for Student Affairs.

While being honored Thursday, Dr. Cottingham was quick to point out that other employees have been with SGC longer. “Even as we welcome new energy and new talent every year, 28 other members of the faculty and staff have completed 20 or more years of service. Several have worked here far longer than I," he said.

Dr. Cottingham also remembered Libbo Belger, a former teacher and great advocate for South Georgia College, who had passed away earlier in the week.

"This celebration came at a poignant time for us, a time when we mourned the loss of long-time teacher and friend Libbo Belger. Those who knew her recognized the treasures that come with lifelong learning and a sincere love for others. Having joined the SGC faculty in 1937 and remained vitally interested in the college throughout her years of retirement, she was one whose devotion to the college sets a standard for others," said Dr. Cottingham.

“We are honored to have faculty and staff like Dr. Cottingham who are dedicated to this institution. A college is only as good as its staff and faculty. South Georgia College has one of the finest groups of employees in the University System, and Dr. Cottingham is one such example of the best this college has to offer. We offer him congratulations for 30 years of hard work and service, and we look forward to having him on campus for many years to come,” said Interim SGC President Dr. Virginia Carson.
