SGC students visit Costa Rica in 2008 Study Abroad
program
Nine South Georgia College students traveled to Costa Rica in May to study
Spanish with the SGC Study Abroad Program.
“Studying abroad is one of the best things a student can do to enrich his or
her knowledge of the world,” said Dr. Carl McDonald, Interim Vice President
for Academic Affairs. “We all need to become global citizens.”
Tiffany Briceņo, SGC Study Abroad Program Coordinator and Associate
Professor of Spanish, said the group concentrated on learning Spanish in the
native environment, while enjoying a home-stay experience with a Costa Rican
family in Turrialba.
Briceņo said the students discovered Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity.
While floating down the Saripiqui River, they observed animals in their
natural habitat. The more adventurous participated in whitewater rafting on
the Pacuare River and body surfing at the Santa Teresa and Puntarenas
beaches on the Pacific Coast. Several students also hiked to the country’s
second highest waterfall near the University of Georgia’s Ecolodge in
Monteverde.
The group sampled the country’s Puerto Rican, French, and Costa Rican
cuisine, including gallo pinto, a typical rice and beans dish, Briceņo said.
The tasting experience was completed with a sampling of fresh Costa Rican
coffee during a breakfast at a coffee plantation.
This year’s Maymester Study Abroad participants—Raquel Briceņo, Desiree
Carver, Austin Crosby, Nikki Fear, Caitlin Hayes, Derrick Railey, Bari
Stewart, Cassi Stone, and Kevin Walden—had the opportunity to earn one to
six credit hours. The Board of Regents’ STARS program and SGC’s Foundation
awarded financial aid to most students. SGC professors Jessica Crowe and Dr.
Bill Webster also supervised students during this unique travel experience.
