Dr. Carson named President of NACCTEP
Dr. Virginia Carson, Interim President of South Georgia
College, has been named president of the National Association of Community
College Teacher Education Programs for the 2008-2009 year.
The National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP)
is an organization of community colleges and students involved in teacher
education programs, universities involved in teacher education programs and
industry partners and professional associations who work as partners with
community college teacher education programs.
NACCTEP supports institutions and individuals and serves as a voice for
community colleges in national discussions about teacher education. It works
to enhance current community college teacher education programs and serves
as a resource for those looking to develop new programs. NACCTEP facilitates
connections between and among community college teacher education programs
and faculty. It is home to a network of these programs, professionals, and
students connected to them.
Dr. Carson understands the importance of two-year colleges and their role in
developing qualified teachers. She has spent a large portion of her career
at two-year colleges in Georgia and Virginia.
She came to SGC from Georgia Highlands College in March, where she was Vice
President for Academic Affairs since 2001. She previously served as dean of
academic services for Georgia Perimeter College’s (GPC) Clarkston campus
from 2000 to 2001. She spent the 1999-2000 academic year as a Fellow of the
American Council on Education at Northern Virginia Community College, in
Annandale, Va., under the direction of the president. Previously, Carson
served as chair of the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and
Engineering, also on GPC’s Clarkston campus. Her years as a mathematics
professor at GPC (formerly DeKalb College) extend back to 1982.
“This is an exciting opportunity. Two-year colleges are important to their
communities in so many different ways, and play a vital role in developing
qualified teachers at all levels of the education process. I am thrilled to
serve as NACCTEP’s president and I look forward to helping colleges continue
to provide the very best education for their students,” said Dr. Carson.
