SGC kicks off entry program at Georgia Southwestern State University

The South Georgia College Entry Program at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus opened registration Thursday, Aug. 7, on the GSW campus.

SGC and GSW inked the agreement that created the entry program on July 1. This is SGC’s second such program; the first began in 1998 at Valdosta State University. “We are very excited to be able to offer this program to the city of Americus and the surrounding communities. It’s been very successful at Valdosta State University,” said Dr. Carl McDonald, SGC’s Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The program allows college freshmen to take courses as SGC students. Entry program students complete all learning support courses and college preparatory curriculum deficiencies, plus core college courses, in order to enter GSW as a sophomore. All core courses transfer to GSW or any University System of Georgia school.

SGC’s goal was to enroll 30 students during the program’s first semester. Thursday, 26 students came to GSW’s Student Success Center for advisement, registration and orientation. Several more
prospective students are scheduled to take the necessary exams, which would meet or exceed SGC’s goal. Krista Smith, interim director of the program, was impressed with the turnout. “We are excited about this new group of students we have at the program in Americus. The students are full of energy and ready to go. Georgia Southwestern and South Georgia have made a way for local students, students from surrounding areas and beyond to attend college and receive what they need to transfer and move on. It is all about helping our students create their own success story,” said Smith.

The SGCEP includes learning support courses and 30 hours of university accredited, core curriculum courses. With the support of GSW, the SGCEP also offers the compass entry exam. For high school students who did not complete the required courses in the College Preparatory Curriculum, the SGCEP offers courses to meet the CPC requirements. All SGCEP courses are offered on the GSW campus with SGC serving as the academic institution of record. Students have GSW identification cards and have access to all GSW events, services, and facilities.

For more information about SGC, go to www.sgc.edu. The application for admission can also be found on the SGC Web site by clicking on “Prospective Students,” then “Admissions,” and finally “Application for Admission.” For more information about the SGCEP at GSW, call 229-931-5141 or email sgcep.gsw@sgc.edu. The SGCEP office at GSW is in the English Building, Room 241.
