FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SGC Hosts Coach Bowden Reunion Approximately 125 guests, including former players along with their spouses and guests, attended the 2008 Coach Bobby Bowden Alumni Reunion hosted by South Georgia College on June 6-7.SGC is proud to have been Coach Bowden’s first stop during his extensive and illustrious head coaching career. From 1956 to 1958, Coach Bowden served as SGC’s Athletic Director and head coach of football; he also served as the head coach for baseball and basketball in1956. “These amazing people are truly proud of their SGC roots. Over the years, they have helped the college in many ways including creating scholarships for current and future students. They have had productive careers in so many fields serving as the backbone of America. We are proud to call them our own and lend our support this wonderful event,” said Dr. Virginia Carson, SGC Interim President. The event started with a casual cookout at the Clower Student Activities Center on the evening of June 6. Clower, which underwent a $9.1 million remodel and reopened last year, served as SGC’s basketball court during Coach Bowden’s time and even housed one of his offices. On the morning of June 7, Coach Bowden and several attendees enjoyed a round of golf at the Douglas Golf and Country Club. The event closed with a banquet that evening in SGC’s formal dining room where the group heard remarks from Dr. Virginia Carson, SGC Foundation President Matt Greer, SGC Athletic Director Rob Brunel, Bowden Alumni Reunion Chair Ron Kelley, one of Coach Bowden’s sons and special guest Terry Bowden, and ended with special remarks from Coach Bowden himself. “All of the attendees had a great time reminiscing about their days at SGC and playing for Coach Bowden,” said Walda Kight, SGC Director of Community and Foundation Relations, “We are very fortunate to have a man of his caliber as a part of our school’s history.” Cutlines: (From left to right) Coach Bowden’s wife, Ann Bowden, Coach Bobby Bowden, and SGC Interim President Dr. Virginia Carson talking during the June 6 cookout at the 2008 Coach Bobby Bowden Reunion. # # # # About South Georgia College South Georgia College (www.sgc.edu) was founded in 1906 and is a two-year institution in the University System of Georgia.
