SGC Academic Quiz Bowl Team Places 4th in the Nation
South Georgia College (SGC) is pleased to announce the SGC
Quiz Bowl Team brought home 4th place in the National Championship
tournament held April 12-13, 2008 at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.
The SQC Quiz Bowl Team is comprised of members: Jeremy Adams a sophomore
from Douglas, GA; Josh Herrin a freshman from Waycross, GA; Ben Mancil a
sophomore from Dallas, TX; and Ryan Musgrove a sophomore from Douglas, GA.
According to Dr. Mike Butler, SGC Quiz Bowl Coach and SGC Professor, “A
fourth-place finish among the nation’s Community College quiz programs is
the best we’ve ever had in my time at SGC.” Only eight community college
teams are invited to participate in the 32-team tournament, South Georgia
has competed at the event four times. In addition to their final ranking,
SGC posted the best record among community college teams and also surpassed
their former school record for wins at the national tournament. South
Georgia defeated the University of Alabama (140-105), Georgia Perimeter
College (90-70), Mississippi Copiah-Lincoln (140-75) and the community
college champions from Kansas, Pratt Community College (100-65).
Dr. Virginia Carson, South Georgia College’s Interim President states, “I am
very proud of our team and school and commend Dr. Butler on this
accomplishment. It is a testament to the quality of students we have here at
SGC.”
Having led the team for the past seven years Dr. Butler has recently been
joined by Dr. Frank Holiwski. “The coaches’ and members’ dedication have
been extraordinary. Their accomplishments have added so much to the whole
SGC experience,” says Dr. Jim Cottingham, Vice President for Student
Affairs.
The Quiz Bowl Team is one of the 20 student clubs and organizations funded
through student fees. Dr. Butler, closes with commenting, “Last year the
squad ranked 6th nationally, so I’m proud of this group for continuing and
elevating our tradition of excellence at this prestigious national
competition. Students like these – who love to learn and possess a desire to
compete against other bright students from around the nation - are one of
the main reasons that I chose this profession.”
