FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE South Georgia College SGC students defeat 5-year debate champ at Student Support Services competition South Georgia College students won first place at the annual Georgia Association of Special Programs Personnel (GASPP) Debate Competition, ending a 5-year win streak by reigning champ Morehouse College. Student Support Service (SSS) students Roberta Rodgers and Kristi Watkins won the GASPP Debate Competition Saturday, November 17, in Atlanta. Rodgers and Watkins debated Morehouse College in the first round and again in the final round. Along the way, the two had to debate topics such as the legality of dog fighting, universal health care, and the current sub-prime mortgage crisis. “It was a shocking experience, to say the least,” says Rodgers. SGC was one of the only two-year college to attend the event, and it was the college’s first appearance as well. “But we did our homework and were well-prepared for the topics.” “I cried when I heard the news,” says Watkins, “because it was such an awesome feeling. Here we were, this small two-year college that no one has heard about, and we end up winning the whole thing!” SGC’s SSS Director Angela Nuga says the students’ activities at SGC were valuable in helping prepare them for this intensely exciting competition. “We are extremely proud of these exceptional students,” she says, “and we hope to keep this a winning tradition!” Watkins and Rodgers will travel to the regional championship in the spring of 2008 to represent Georgia. They will compete against the champion teams from other SSS programs in the South. # # # # About South Georgia College South Georgia College (www.sgc.edu) was founded in 1906 and is a two-year institution in the University System of Georgia.
