SGC professors present papers at Southern culture conference

Two South Georgia College professors recently presented scholarly papers at the Popular Culture Association in the South/American Culture Association in the South (PCAS/ACAS) annual conference.

Dr. Michael Fisher, Professor of English and French, and Dr. Lori Seward, Professor of Speech and Theatre, joined scholars from throughout the southeastern United States in Jacksonville, Fla., to participate in panel discussions on topics ranging from reality television to teaching Shakespeare.

Dr. Fisher’s paper, “Lust, Laughter, and Loot in the Love Episodes of Faulkner’s The Hamlet”, explores the love relationships in one of Faulkner’s less familiar works, one of a trio of novels about the Snopes family.

“The Hamlet is one of Faulkner’s funniest novels,” says Dr. Fisher. The novel chronicles the rise of the Snopes family in Frenchman’s Bend, a small town built on the ruins of an Old South plantation.  “It is a book that is reminiscent of Mark Twain’s finest works, such as Huckleberry Finn or Connecticut Yankee, because it contains humor tempered by a touch of sadness.”

Dr. Seward’s paper, “Hellzapoppin’ Here: Olsen and Johnson’s ‘Masterwork’ and its Influence on Popular Entertainment” elaborated on work she did in her doctoral dissertation.  In her paper, Seward discusses the influence of early 20th century comedians Olsen and Johnson’s style on a variety of more recent entertainment forms including the TV show, Scrubs, and the films of Mel Brooks.

“Olsen and Johnson popularized the extensive use of silly props, audience participation, and rapid fire gags long before anyone else,” says Dr. Seward. “Mel Brooks himself acknowledged the pair’s influence on his work by naming a Blazing Saddles character Olson Johnson.”

PCAS/ACAS meets annually in a southeastern state.  Dr. Fisher and Dr. Seward also presented papers at last year’s conference in Savannah, GA.  The 2008 conference is scheduled to be held in Memphis, TN.
