Mission Statement
The primary mission of the William S. Smith Library is twofold: to provide a
student-centered environment with ready access to a core collection of
information resources and services that support and augment the associate and
baccalaureate degree programs of South Georgia College and to offer
bibliographic and Information Literacy instruction for accessing, evaluating,
and using informational resources effectively and ethically. In fulfilling this
objective, the library serves as an instructional unit and as an aid to research
to produce life-long learners who are successful in a global society.
The library actively participates in the educational and community service
processes of South Georgia College by:
- promoting high levels of student learning through instruction and
freedom of inquiry;
- utilizing available and emerging technologies that support and enhance
instruction and information retrieval;
- cultivating an environment that enhances instructional and individual
excellence;
- providing services from professional, qualified librarians who are
active educators and from staff who are committed to meeting the needs of
students and faculty;
- supporting the College’s off-campus and online classes;
- continuous planning and assessment, responsiveness, staff development,
and technical assistance to meet user needs;
- collaborating with other units of the College to offer distinctive
programs and services designed to meet the intellectual and cultural needs
of the community within the College's scope of influence;
- cooperating with other System institutions, State agencies, local
schools and technical institutes, and the business community in sharing
physical, human, and information resources to expand programs available to
the citizens of Georgia.
