SOUTH GEORGIA COLLEGE WILLIAM S. SMITH LIBRARY
COMPUTER USE GUIDELINES

William S. Smith Library public-access computers are primarily intended for educational research by SGC students, faculty, staff, and other students within the University System of Georgia. Library computers are not installed with filtering devices or software to limit Internet access, although the campus network may utilize such security and other filtering or restrictive devices/software. Library computers are monitored for adherence to computer use policies.

General Guidelines

  1. Save all personal research and word processing to a floppy disk (a:) or jump drive. Do not save on the computer’s hard drive (c:).
  2. Do not place food and/or drink containers (closed or otherwise) near the student and community patron computer terminals/tables/units.
  3. Illegal copy or transfer of copyrighted materials (such as movies, music or software) is prohibited.
  4. Adhere to the South Georgia College Campus Acceptable Usage Policy for Campus Computing Resources.
  5. Children of students are considered community users and must follow the William S. Smith Library Public Use Policy.

Fees

SGC students, faculty, and staff must use their SGC Institutional ID Cards to print from the Reference Area and Computer Lab computers at a cost of 5 cents per page. All other users will use the community patron printer and are responsible for printouts in the amount of 10 cents for each side of page. This includes children of students, which are considered community users.

Headphones

Headphones connected to the Reference Area and Computer Lab computers are available for use but must be turned down sufficiently to contain noise.

Priorities

Workstations are available to William S. Smith Library users in the following priority order:

  1. Current SGC students, faculty, and staff
  2. Current students, faculty, and staff from the University System of Georgia and other academic institutions
  3. Users with SGC Emeritus status
  4. All other library users

Users accessing GALILEO, the online catalog (GIL), Internet, and other licensed Library research databases for academic purposes have highest priority over other users. Recreational use is given lowest priority.

General workstation usage is limited to one hour when all computers are filled, but high or low usage may permit adjustment to the length of sessions. Those using workstations for recreational purposes (such as Internet surfing, personal e-mail) may be asked to give up their computer if students and others are waiting, with priority given to students for academic use.

The software/hardware in the William S. Smith Library is the property of the SGC/University System of Georgia. Any effort to alter existing software or hardware, to add to or delete existing software, or to degrade computer system performance is considered an act of vandalism and is forbidden.

Inappropriate behavior as deemed by the library staff (such as using foul/obscene language, displaying disruptive and/or belligerent behavior, harassment of other patrons or staff) will result in the loss of library computer privileges and/or access to library and/or campus facilities at the discretion of the Library Director.

Users will be subject to suspension or revocation of library and/or computer privileges at the will of the Library Director for non-adherence to these guidelines, the South Georgia College Campus Acceptable Usage Policy for campus computing resources, the South Georgia College Email Use Policy, and acceptable use outlined in:

NOTE: The library reserves the right to change this policy. Such a change will be duly posted.
