C.   Sick Leave

            1.   Policy

Sick leave is a privilege, not an inherent right to additional time off. Abuse of this privilege may be considered a serious offense, and could be grounds for termination.

Employees should notify their Supervisor immediately if they are unable to report to work due to illness. Those failing to "call in" might have the absence charged against annual leave, or considered as leave without pay, depending upon their Supervisor's recommendation.
The proper leave forms must be completed, reflect dates and time taken, and be approved by the employee's Supervisor.
            2.   Eligibility
All regular employees who work half-time or more will earn and accrue sick leave.
Temporary employees and regular employees working less than half-time do not earn or accrue sick leave.
            3.   Rate of Accrual
All regular full-time employees will accrue eight (8) hours of sick leave for each calendar month of service.
All regular part-time employees working one-half time or more will accrue sick leave in an equivalent ratio to their percentage of full-time employment.
Sick leave will accrue at the end of each month.
Sick leave is cumulative during employment.
            4.   Sick Leave with Pay
Sick leave may be granted at the College's discretion with the Supervisor's approval for any of the following reasons:
* Employee's illness or injury.
* Medical or dental treatment or consultation.
* Quarantine due to a contagious illness in the employee's household.
* Illness, injury or death in the employee's immediate family requiring the employee's presence. Immediate family includes parents, spouses, children, grandparents and in-laws.
Employees who claim sick leave for more than five (5) continuous working days must provide a physician's statement to claim further sick leave benefits. At their discretion, Supervisors may require a physician's statement for shorter periods of sick leave. The Supervisor must forward a copy of the physician's statement to the Human Resources Office.
In the event that the balance of sick leave is insufficient to compensate the hours required for time taken, annual leave will compensate the difference if the annual leave balance is sufficient. Sick leave balances do not compensate for time taken for annual leave.
            5.   Sick Leave without Pay
Any employee unable to return to work after using all accumulated sick leave and accrued vacation may be granted sick leave without pay for no longer than one (1) year.
Approved sick leave without pay will allow employees to elect to continue group insurance benefits and the College will continue its share of the cost for such period.
Employees should contact the Human Resources Office and arrange for payment of their portion of the monthly premium to continue participation in the group insurance program. All other benefits are prohibited which otherwise would accrue to the employee.
            6.   Returning to Work
Employees are required to furnish a written approval from their physician referencing the date that the employee may return to work. This written approval is necessary for employees that have claimed sick leave for more than five continuous working days.
            7.   Termination of Employment
Terminating employees will not accumulate sick leave or receive sick pay after their last day worked.
Employees terminating employment before the 15th of the month will not earn sick leave for the month in which they terminate.
Sick leave may be used for service credit with the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia for an employee retiring from their position. A minimum of sixty days sick leave accrual is required before any sick leave may be credited toward retirement service.
