Department: Academic Division as appropriate: Business and Social Sciences; Humanities and Learning Support; Natural Science, Mathematics, and Physical Education; Nursing; or South Georgia College Entry Program

Purpose:

The primary duty of a faculty member is teaching. In addition, a faculty member is expected to demonstrate success in some or all of these areas: service to the College, academic achievement, professional growth and development, and academic advisement. Teaching assignments may be on the Douglas campus, off-campus, day, evenings, week-ends, and/or on-line.

Nature of work:

Essential functions

Teach 15-16 semester credit hours each semester, 30-32 total for the academic year.

Meet each class as scheduled at the designated time and place and for the designated length of time.

Maintain a minimum of ten office hours for student consultation per week, appropriate to the time and delivery method of the assigned courses (e.g.., evening, week-end, on-line, or off-campus) and post this information on the office door (or on-line in the case of on-line courses).

At the beginning of each course, provide each student with a syllabus per the guidelines in the faculty handbook.

Develop new courses and course materials as appropriate.

Serve on committees, task forces, and other college-improvement activities.

Attend and participate in all college-wide and appropriate divisional meetings.

Support student activities and clubs.

Participate in professional development activities on an on-going basis.

Stay current in the teaching discipline(s).

Assist advisees with academic planning, scheduling, graduation, registration, and other appropriate academic issues.

Submit proof rosters and grades to the Registrar’s Office by the assigned deadlines.

 

Required/Desired Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

Mastery of the teaching discipline.

Ability to engage students in active learning of the discipline and in critical thinking.

Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral forms.

Ability to adapt instruction to enhance student learning, including the appropriate use of traditional, technology-assisted, hands-on, and other forms of instruction.

Knowledge of academic culture, policies, and procedures.

 

Required/Desired Education, Experience and Necessary Qualifications:

All faculty positions require a minimum of a Master’s Degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the teaching discipline. The Doctorate is preferred.

Supervision:

 

Each faculty member reports to the appropriate Division Dean.
