Working Title:          Public Safety Officer

Department:             Physical Plant and Public Safety

 

Purpose:

Patrol the college campus to prevent and detect crimes and to maintain law and order.

 

Nature of Work:

Essential Functions

·         Enforce criminal laws, traffic laws, and campus regulations.

·         Write traffic/parking tickets as needed and make arrests and/or referrals to proper authorities as needed.

·        Patrol campus in car and on foot.

·        Check security and safety of campus buildings, locking and unlocking buildings and taking measures to prevent loss or damage to the buildings

·        Prepare necessary records and reports.

·        Testify in court when applicable.

·        Investigate traffic accidents and criminal or non-criminal incidents that occur on campus.

·        Recover and secure stolen/lost property, or evidence, properly document, and release to the appropriate persons.

·        Provide various types of public service and assistance to students, faculty, staff, guest, and visitors on campus.

·        Perform dispatcher duties, such as operating telephone and short-wave radios, and perform related clerical tasks. 

·        Perform first aid and CPR when needed.

·        Transport mail to/from Federal Post Office as needed.

·        Transport funds to/from the bank/ provide money escorts.

·        Put up and take down flags.

·        Perform other work-related duties as requested.

Required/Desired Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

·        Knowledge of standard police practices and techniques, applicable federal and state laws, college regulations, and Public Safety Department Policies and Procedures.

·        Knowledge of the college properties, population, and traffic control problems.

·        Knowledge of fire prevention techniques.

·        Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action.

·        Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, and tactfully and with respect for the rights of others.

·        Ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions.

·        Ability to obtain information through interviews, interrogations, and observation.

·        Ability to understand and execute difficult oral and written instructions.

·        Ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing, and to prepare comprehensive records and reports.

·        Ability to develop skill in unarmed defense and in the use and care of firearms and other defensive weapons.

·        Ability to develop and maintain good public relations.

·        Ability to meet such specific physical requirements as may be necessary to perform all aspects of public safety duties including apprehension, foot pursuit, and physical restraint in certain conditions.

·        Skills in furnishing first aid and comfort in case of accidents, illness, and death situations.

 

Required/Desired Education, Experience and Necessary Qualifications:

High School diploma required, Associate Degree in Criminal Justice preferred; P.O.S.T. certified or eligibility for certification required.  Valid Georgia driver’s license required.

 

Supervision:

 

 

·        Directly supervised by the Chief of the Public Safety Department, but must comply with directives from other senior administrators including the President, the Vice President for Business Affairs and the Director of Physical Plant & Public Safety. Performance results are reviewed through conferences, written reports, inspections, and observation.

·        May supervise other officers of equal rank and seniority when Chief of Public Safety is unavailable.  Required to supervise contract security guards and work-studies.
