Working Title: Grounds/Auto Mechanic Supervisor

Department: Physical Plant
Provide essential support to the overall maintenance and repair of the College facilities. This is supervisory, clerical and manual work in receiving, storing, and issuing materials, supplies, and equipment including inventory and warehousing for the Physical Plant Department and entire campus. In addition, this position supervises and participates in maintenance, repair and improvement of grounds, ground structures and vehicle maintenance, using labor, material and equipment available to support all areas of the College. On occasion this position will be responsible to oversee and coordinate special tasks as assigned by the Director of Physical Plant.
Supervision
· Supervision of personnel and direct hands on participation of the maintenance, repairs, alterations and operation of Grounds and Warehouse operations. Supervision includes; pre-inspections, post inspections, project approvals, sign-off, training and direct supervision of the Grounds personnel. Coordination of outside contract support which includes; scope preparation, contract formulation, contractor selection, negotiations, inspection, project approval, job completion, sign-off, punch listing of electrical and related systems.
· Establishes priorities, plans and supervises the day-to-day operation of the Grounds personnel and Automobile Maintenance personnel. Review work assignments, schedules, landscaping programs, procedures and practices, and recommend improvements as needed. Meet with the Director to review activities, plan initiatives and provide direction on achieving the department objectives.
· Prioritize, process, coordinate and schedule work to insure efficient distribution of labor of all assigned work.
· Maintain records and inventories pertaining to the shop and other department purchases.
· Maintain close liaison with other Physical Plant shops and College personnel that are applicable to the project or work involved.
· Effectively utilize the computer and other equipment needed in the administration and operation of the shop.
· Provide oversight and inspection for assigned projects under the jurisdiction of the Department of Physical Plant.
· Initiates and executes department work order requests and maintains close coordination between other physical plant shops.
· Ensures the applicable designs and plans are reviewed for scope, completeness and conformity to the College standards.
· Maintains accurate cost control ledgers on all expenditures and commitments. Prepares estimates, budgets and cost forecasts accurately and expeditiously.
· Ensures accurate and complete contract scope preparation, contractor selection and safety and code compliance standards.
· Provides essential communication and cooperation with administrators, department chairs, other Physical Plant shops and the College community.
· Maintain a strong personal and professional effort to accomplish all assigned tasks.
· Establishes and maintains good customer relations throughout the College.
· Report to work as scheduled by immediate supervisor.
Marginal Duties
· Provide project assistance to the Director as appropriate.
· Prepare miscellaneous project estimates including manpower and material requirements.
· Coordinate, maintain records and initiate punch lists on work that is performed by outside contractors.
· Verify that contractor’s work is performed in a satisfactory manner, that work adheres to the drawings and specifications, and meets with acceptable construction standards.
· Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
· Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair of automotive equipment.
· Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline engines and of mechanical repair of trucks and construction and grounds equipment.
· Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades.
· Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment and to make necessary repairs.
· Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repairs.
· Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
· Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse climatic conditions.
· High School Diploma required.
· Completion of approved training in automotive mechanics.
· Experience in Grounds maintenance work, including experience in a supervisory capacity.
· Valid Georgia drivers license (CDL preferred) and ability to operate backhoe, forklift, and other heavy grounds equipment.
Basic computer skills.Supervision:
