Working Title:          Director of Physical Plant and Public Safety

Purpose:

Reporting to the Vice President for Business Affairs, directs the planning and administration of campus facilities and public safety operations including buildings and grounds, infrastructure and security and safety of the college. Responsibilities include providing strategic and technical guidance to senior staff to ensure appropriate development of the campus to support the mission of the college. The Director provides leadership and professional direction in the areas of facilities planning, budget management, administration, maintenance and repair; architectural and engineering services; construction and renovations management, landscaping; custodial services, energy management and trade teams. Will work closely with a diverse set of campus, town and contractor constituencies in an innovative and collaborative fashion. 

 

Nature of Work:

Essential Functions

·                    Provide overall management, supervision and professional direction to physical plant and public safety organization.

·                    Provides facilities planning; space administration; architectural, and engineering; construction management; facilities maintenance and repair; renovations; utilities; custodial, landscaping and other maintenance services.

·                    Oversee the planning, organization and activities of the college public safety department assuring that law and order are maintained, that laws and ordinances are enforced, and that measures are implemented to prevent crimes and protect lives and property.

·                    Develops cost effective and time efficient solutions for maintenance and construction efforts.

·                    Project Management: Ensures quality, timely, and efficient completion of Capital initiatives, major renovations and maintenance projects.

·                    Meets on a regular basis with the division chairs and other senior administrators to evaluate the facilities plans and services concerning their departments.

·                    Develops and revises policies pertaining to the provision of services, e.g., priorities, scheduling, nature of services provided, and degree to which services are provided.

·                    Determines division training needs and works with section supervisors in developing programs including supervisory training, physical plant workshops, custodial and grounds training, public safety qualifications and recertification, and skilled trade certification training.

·                    Is the principal department representative to the President’s Cabinet on physical plant matters, as well as serving as the intuitional representative to such professional organizations as APPA (Association of Physical Plant Administrators), and GAPPA (Georgia Association of Physical Plant Administrators).

Required/Desired Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

The director must have strong human relations abilities, excellent oral and written communication skills, an understanding of an academic environment and a demonstrated strength in budget management and proven leadership ability.  Have knowledge of the regulatory issues, including construction permitting, workplace safety and environmental regulations.  The position requires a sound knowledge of computerized systems/software appropriate to physical plant operations. Flexibility, adaptability and resourcefulness are essential. Requires a positive attitude and strong professional relationship; with the campus and community.

 

Required/Desired Education, Experience and Necessary Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, construction or business management is the minimum education. A closely related degree will be considered. An advanced degree is preferred. The director must have general experience and a good understanding of public safety and security operations.  Preference is given for ten years senior supervisory experience in physical plant facilities and construction management in a higher education arena.
