Working Title:           Chief of Public Safety

Purpose:

To plan, organize, and direct the activities of the college Public Safety Department, assuring that law and order are maintained, that laws and ordinances are enforced, and that measures are implemented to prevent crimes and protect lives and property.  To coordinate with security persons of Parker Security to ensure South Georgia College has public safety and/or security persons on campus.

 

Nature of Work:

Essential Functions

·        Plans, organizes, directs and evaluates all departmental activities, including the development of departmental policies, budget activities, planning, research; maintain adequate records of criminal incidents, accident and safety problems, and vehicle registration.

·        Supervises directly or through subordinate supervisors the staff of law enforcement employees.                                             

·        Formulates and prescribes work methods and procedures to be followed by the Department, appraise work conditions, and takes necessary steps to improve police operations.

·        Assumes overall basic responsibility of insuring optimum training programs for the employees.                                                        

·        Advises and assists subordinates in highly complex criminal or other investigations.

·        Assumes responsibility for insuring close, effective liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

·        Attends civic clubs and other community organizational meetings on campus as well as off campus to explain and promote the activities and functions of the Department and to establish favorable public relations.

·        Reports to work as scheduled by immediate supervisor.

Required/Desired Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

·        Extensive knowledge of standard police practices and techniques; applicable federal and state laws, and college regulations.

·        Extensive knowledge of the standards by which the quality of police service is evaluated; the use of police records and their application to police administration.

·        Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of modern police administration and police methods.

·        Ability to plan, organize and direct the work of a large number of subordinates performing varied operations connected with police activities.

·        Ability to develop proper training and instructional procedures for employees, and to maintain a high level of discipline and morale.

·        Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other college officials, city, county, state, and federal authorities, civic leaders, news media, and the general public.

Ability to prepare and present effective oral and written informative material relating to the activities of the department.

 

Required/Desired Education, Experience and Necessary Qualifications:

·        Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field required; extensive, progressively responsible experience in law enforcement and crime prevention work, including thorough command, supervisory and administrative experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

 

Supervision:

 

The Chief of Public Safety reports to the Director of Physical Plant.
