Job Description
Working Title: Library Director

To administer the library by planning, organizing, and providing information services required by the academic, student welfare, and community service missions of South Georgia College, and to supervise the library staff.
· Directs the activities of the library staff
1. recommends to the Vice President for Academic Affairs the appointment and promotion of staff members under his/her supervision
2. creates and maintains a work schedule for the staff that will ensure adequate staffing during hours of operation
· Directs the development and operation of effective services including:
1. the selection of a collection of materials that will support curriculum requirements, meet faculty and staff needs, provide extracurricular materials for students, and serve selected information needs of the community
2. the maintenance of a daily schedule that will meet the needs of the public served
3. the provision of adequate reference service including continuing student and faculty orientation and information service and support
Directs the technical service of the library including:
1. the maintenance of an efficient acquisitions process to secure requested materials
2. the operation of a processing procedure that will make retrieving the materials rapid and easy
3. the implementation of an effective communications procedure to keep faculty, staff, and students informed of publication and acquisition of new materials
Directs the audiovisual services of the library including:
1. provision of the latest types of audiovisual equipment and materials and training in their effective use.
2. provision for the production of all types of audiovisual materials and provision by professional expertise for the purpose of guiding instructors in the use of these materials
Prepares and submits to the Vice President for Academic Affairs the library budget and administers the approved budget in accord with College policies and procedures
Prepares and submits an annual report of the achievements and needs of the library to the Vice President for Academic Affairs
Collects data and submits reports as required by the Board of Regents, U.S. Office of Education, and other state, federal, and professional organizations.
Obtains all possible information on grants available for library resources and contacts all possible sources including federal agencies and private foundations
Maintains College archives
Non-standard working hours.
Management skills to supervise and evaluate personnel effectively and to administer the Library budget in accord with college procedures. Ability to plan, organize, and administer library services including materials collections, scheduling, reference services, processing procedures, and audiovisual resources. Knowledge of current trends in library services including automated library systems. Ability to work with all community groups and to motivate and encourage others.
Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited institution.
Supervision:
The Library Director reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
