GOAL 3 - STUDENT SUCCESS

SGSC WILL IMPROVE STUDENT SUCCESS RATES AS MEASURED BY COURSE COMPLETION, RETENTION, GRADUATION AND TRANSFER TO OTHER POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS AFTER PREFERABLY ATTAINING A DEGREE FROM SGSC.

  1. Develop and conduct a college-wide survey annually (based on the Community College Survey of Student Engagement(CCSSE) to measure the academic and co-curricular engagement of first year students. Use the results of the survey to diagnose academic and other areas of engagement in need of support.
  2. Develop and implement a college-wide Retention Plan to increase the first to second year institutional retention rate for first-time, full-time freshmen by 10 percent by year five of the plan. This retention rate will have no group (male/female, minority, residential, commuter, athletes, and campus locations) more than 2 percent below the institutional average. Publish SGSC student retention initiatives and data (both baseline and progressive) annually for internal and external stakeholders. Use historical data and baseline measures to track and modify activities and programs leading to increased retention, progression and increased graduation rates.
  3. Develop and implement a Co-curricular Plan in the first year of the Strategic Plan to support student engagement within the college environment and incorporate activities for residential and commuter students.
  4. Design and develop a new Professional Advising model in the first year of the Strategic Plan to include activities targeting at-risk students, in order to support ongoing and meaningful academic interventions. The focus is on, but not limited to, expanding the Early Alert program, lessening time to degree and increasing utilization of referral programs and resources at SGSC. Assess results annually and adjust the plan as needed.
