History of the College
South Georgia College in Douglas was founded by state legislature in 1906 as
the Eleventh District Agricultural and Mechanical School. The A & M schools
were residential secondary schools that gave rise to several of Georgia’s
colleges and universities Georgia. In 1927 the Georgia Legislature passed
a bill that made SGC the state’s first state supported two-year college. In
1932 the college joined 25 other institutions to become original members of
the University System of Georgia. This placed these colleges under the
governance of the Board of Regents. South Georgia College assumed its
present name in 1936.
The three original buildings on the semicircle were built in 1907-1908.
These historic structures are now joined by 20 other structures on the
beautiful 190 acre campus. The most recent physical additions to the
college have been the expanded wellness center and indoor pool, the addition
to the science and mathematics building, the greenway trail, additional
athletic fields, the renovation of the Clower Student Life Center, and the
construction of the Tiger Village residence hall.
With a proud tradition
of serving the people of this region while attracting students from
throughout the world, the students, staff, and faculty make South Georgia
College a great place to discover a Degree of Difference.
