Introduction of South Georgia College

South Georgia College is a co-educational, residential, two-year unit of the University System of Georgia. The College is located in Douglas, Georgia, the county seat of Coffee County. The City of Douglas, a warm and friendly community of 14,000 citizens, is situated in the south-central portion of Georgia, which boasts a moderate climate favorable for year-round outdoor activities.

Founded in 1906 as the Eleventh District A & M School, South Georgia College has a rich and colorful heritage. South Georgia College is recognized as the oldest two-year unit in Georgia's University System.

Douglas citizen Benajah Peterson donated the original 300 acres of land for the College. Other Coffee Countians raised $52,000 for building construction and offered free utilities for the first ten years of the school's operation.

For two decades the Eleventh District A & M School set the pace for the growing number of high schools in the area. In 1927 the Georgia legislature passed a bill elevating South Georgia College and some of the other A & M Schools to Junior College status.

From the original three buildings constructed in 1907-08, South Georgia has developed into a thriving center for learning, with 26 buildings located on the 220-acre campus. Peterson, Davis, and Powell Halls have been completely renovated.
South Georgia College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award certificates and associate degrees. Contact the Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097 or call 404-679-4500 for questions about the accreditation of South Georgia College.
