Academic Advisement Center

Academic advisement at South Georgia College is an essential, integral component of a student's total program of development and is a teaching and learning process that assists the student with decision-making, problem-solving, and evaluation skills.

Advising Appointments

Academic advising is available to help students identify appropriate courses, select majors, select transfer institutions and assist with academic problems. Students are encouraged to seek advising on a regular basis in order to achieve their educational objectives. Appointments may be scheduled directly through the student's academic advisor or by the division secretaries.

South Georgia College New Student Orientation

The purpose of orientation is to provide students with the information they need to successfully begin their college studies. It is part of the admissions process that is completed after you have the necessary college entry placement testing (if required) and application paperwork.

A few of the topics presented are listed below:

  • Important College policies and procedures
  • Overview of the College catalog
  • Overview of the class schedule
  • Registration process

As a part of orientation you will also sit down for a few minutes with an advisor who will advise you concerning courses for your first term. He or she will also recommend that you make a formal appointment at a later date, to cover your course requirements in more detail and to talk about your education or career plans.

New students have different ways to complete their orientation, options which may vary as to their availability at different campuses:

  • Online Orientation — an orientation as close as your computer.
  • Small Group Orientation — a scheduled meeting with an advisor of 8-15 students.

After you complete any testing required, you will be given a choice of the method you prefer and more information about the orientation process. If you have any questions about this process, call the admissions office at 912.260.4206 or email admissions@sgc.edu.
