Mission Statement


South Georgia College - Athletics

S- Success - Achieve in athletics, academics, and personal and professional development.

G- Graduate- Educate and graduate student-athletes.

C- Commitment- Commit to providing an environment where all student-athletes can pursue their athletic endeavors.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics of South Georgia College is to provide an athletic program that helps develop the whole person through education and competition, to stimulate a lasting attitude of discipline, sportsmanship, integrity, leadership, and social responsibility, to promote ethnic and cultural diversity within athletic programs, to insure equal opportunity for all staff and student-athletes, and to make the athletic program an enduring source of pride for the student population, student-athletes, alumni, college, and community.

Vision Statement

The vision of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at South Georgia College is to provide student-athletes an environment that promotes and supports academic, athletic and personal achievement, to field athletic teams to perform at competitive levels in conference competition, to utilize highly qualified coaches, dedicated support staff, and administrative personnel to help individuals become better students, athletes, and citizens, and to prepare student-athletes to make transitions to the next level of participation academically and athletically.

Goals and Objectives

  • I. Goal - Support the academic and athletic success of student-athletes.
    Plan
    1. Recruit student-athletes who are committed to academic and athletic success to better insure academic eligibility for sport participation and improvement in grade point averages and retention and graduation rates.
    2. Provide an academic support system with access to college academic resources, such as tutorial services, study sessions for athletes, workshops, and orientation seminar for freshman student athletes on topical areas that will assist them in succeeding in their academic and athletic endeavors.
    3. Provide an academic advisor for student athletes to help students define academic goals and develop an educational plan for completion of graduation requirements.
    4. Monitor class attendance and academic progress of all student-athletes on a scheduled basis through the use of formal reporting system provided to academic instructors by the SGC Athletic Department. Address unacceptable reports, develop a plan for improvement, and complete a follow-up process to assess progress.
    5. Track the number of SGC athletes who play at the next level or pursue college degrees or careers related to physical education or athletics.
    6. Encourage faculty and staff to attend games.
    7. Sponsor annual athletic banquet for each sport.

  • II. Goal - Build sports teams that are competitive among NJCAA programs.
    Plan
    1. Attract and retain talented student-athletes by carefully planning for the talent needs of each program, clearly evaluating program successes and failures, providing quality athletic facilities and staff, meeting the needs and expectations of student athletes, and attempting to interest both students and parents in academic and athletic strengths of the institution.
    2. Attract and retain the best-qualified coaches by determining the needs of the program and seeking personnel with skills and qualities to meet such needs, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of prospective candidates, performing annual evaluations, and creating a positive coaching environment that allows for growth and development. .
    3. Create competitive schedules for all teams.
    4. Provide additional scholarships for the athletic program; thus, increasing the likelihood of sports teams becoming more competitive. Continue to increase athletically endowed funds to ensure scholarships and work with SGC Foundation officials concerning funds raised for athletics. Recruit scholar-athletes who earn academic scholarships for educational expenses.

  • III. Goal - Develop a broad-base intercollegiate athletic program that emphasizes participation.
    Plan
    1. Hire skilled coaches who create a positive learning environment, a winning program, and a fun and exciting sports experience.
    2. Expand and improve existing programs.
    3. Develop new programs to meet the changing needs of a diverse undergraduate population. Explore the development of new programs with consideration of program cost, facilities, competitive schedules, athlete recruitment, team travel, staff, and sources of funding.
    4. Continue to increase athletically endowed funds to support new programs and to insure the long-term integrity of all intercollegiate programs. Work with coaches to develop financial resources for athletic programs. Work with appropriate foundation and college officials concerning the receipt and disbursement of funds raised on behalf of athletics. Increase student enrollment to generate additional activity fees and revenue for athletics. Make efforts to recruit scholar-athletes who often receive academic scholarships and additional sources of educational funding.

    Accomplishments/Outcomes - Commit to a hiring process that reflects coaches and staff who possess the Department of Athletics' established priorities of academic integrity, social responsibility, and competitive excellence and SGC's values of respect, responsibility discovery, and excellence.
    Tentative Timeline - Review annually -On-going

  • IV. Goal - Provide equity and opportunity for all.
    Plan
    1. Insure complete compliance with Title IX on the resource management, as well as in direct proportionality.
    2. Institute a survey program for the general student population on sport offerings for student-athletes.
    3. Submit program recommendations, as appropriate, to insure adequate participation opportunities are available for both genders.

    Responsibility - Athletic Director and Coaches
    Accomplishments/Outcomes - Create an environment where Gender Equity and respect for diversity are fundamental components of the decision making process in the athletic department.
    Tentative time-line - On going, with a full title IX self-examination every five years to correct any disparities identified in the examination.

  • V. Goal - Preserve and enhance athletic facilities.
    Plan
    1. Provide quality athletic facilities by establishing a facilities committee to assess facilities and renovation and enhancement needs on a scheduled annual basis.
    2. Establish a formal system to assess, monitor, and maintain the condition of existing facilities on a daily and weekly schedule.
    3. Improve facilities to meet the growing program needs at more than minimum levels.

    Responsibility - Athletic Director, Facilities Assessments Team.
    Accomplishments/Outcomes - Make appropriate and timely improvements to all needed athletic facilities through the facilities assessments team's recommendations.
    Tentative Timeline - 3-01-07 On-going

  • VI. Goal - Improve alumni and community relations and participation.
    Plan
    1. Create a feeling of community among the students and athletic team members to foster a desire to be active alumni, stockholders and long term supporters of SGC athletics.
    2. Improve participation at athletic functions by SGC community through strengthening relationships among student-athletes, coaches, faculty, administration, and staff.
    3. Build relations, encourage participation, and solicit support among local civic groups, the Coffee County Chamber of Commerce, New Century Leaders, area businesses, community leaders, local citizens, and SGC Alumni through communication and public relation efforts of members of the SGC Athletic Department.
    4. Build relations with the Coffee County School System, area school systems, and high school athletic departments to encourage future academic and athletic enrollment at SGC.
    5. Utilize the SGC Wellness Center as a center for community involvement and participation.
    6. Increase public awareness and relations about SGC Athletics through local newspapers and cable channels and SGC College Relations Department. Inform community and alumni constituencies about athletic events.
    7. Create a positive image and encourage community participation through community service activities provided for youth by SGC athletic teams and individual athletes.
    8. Assist in the formation and operation of an Alumni Athletic Council.
    9. Utilize athletic facilities-connect with successful alumni.
    10. Attract youth and potential students to SGC facilities- 4 and 5 year old soccer teams.
    11. Involve local persons in fund raising with SGC coaches.
    12. Provide game cancellation communication.

    Responsibility - Athletic Director, Coaches, and Alumni Staff.
    Accomplishments/Outcomes - Increase loyalty and affinity to South Georgia College Department of Athletics and motivate all constituents to seek close association with the department of athletics.
