Game On: Basketball at South Georgia State College!
Our Student Athlete Commitment
The athletic program at SGSC is designed to be different from other programs in the nation. We know there is more to a successful athletic program than just winning games. Our program is designed to teach athletes the key elements that will make their current and future lives more successful. We do this in a family environment where we truly care about our Student Athlete’s personal, educational, as well as athletic needs.
The Men’s Basketball program is fully committed to the mission of the athletic program. In just 7 years as a basketball program, we have averaged 20 wins a season (147 wins total), won the GCAA Regular Season Championship 2014-15, GCAA Conference Tournament in 2010-11, played in the NJCAA National Tournament in 2010-11 and made the conference tournament all six years eligible while being nationally ranked in numerous defensive categories. Equally important, is the success of our student-athletes off the court. In the previous 7 years of the program’s existence, 53 student-athletes have moved on to continue their education at four year institutions while playing basketball at the four-year level. Also over the past 7 years, 80%-plus of our basketball players have graduated with an Associate degree before moving on. Last season (2015-16) we finished runner-up in the regular season and nationally ranked #22 in the final NJCAA Poll with 8 of 8 players graduating with an associates and all moving on to the four-year level to play basketball and continue their education; the season before (2014-15) not only did SGSC win a regular season championship and finish the season ranked 18th In the NJCAA, but had 7 of 7 sophomores graduate and move onto play four-year basketball (4 to NCAA Division I schools). Also, we have had 3 NJCAA All-Americans in just 7 seasons of competition and 2 NJCAA Academic All-Americans. We are very proud of our student-athletes while they are here but we know they will go on to accomplish much more– just like all of our student body strives to do.
