Special Education/Early Childhood Education Dual Degree Program
Valdosta State University in collaboration with South Georgia College responded to the teacher shortage in Georgia by initiating a Special Education/Early Childhood Education dual degree program in 2005. This program provides a unique opportunity for future teachers who are pursuing or have an Associates Degree, an Early Childhood Degree, or a degree in any field. These future teachers may earn a Master’s
Degree in Special Education and Early Childhood Education (Pre-kindergarten through grade 5) by attending classes offered by Valdosta State University at South Georgia College.
Classes are held during the evening each semester at South Georgia College until degree requirements are met. In addition, a few classes are held on line and students attend a limited number of pre-announced preparatory meetings on the main campus of Valdosta State University in Valdosta. Thus, students can live at home and come attend classes near home and to get degrees that result in graduates obtaining employment in grades pre-kindergarten through 5.
These graduates of Valdosta State University’s nationally recognized best practice program meet Georgia standards and for educator certification, and the federal requirement as “highly qualified” teachers. They are the best of the best and can work with children with certain special needs and those in regular general education programs.
