SGCEP OverviewThe South Georgia Regional Educational Consortium was founded in 1998 to provide an alternative means of university entry for students in the region surrounding Valdosta, Georgia. Students can take high school-level remedial courses as well as freshman-level college courses. In its first semester of operation, SGREC had 36 students. By the second semester, that number increased to 62. Students have performed at a commendable rate on both the COMPASS and Regents exams. About 1/3 of the original class have moved into colleges or universities as sophomores after one year. This success is attributable to a dedicated faculty and excellent student-teacher class ratios. The principal public high schools from which SGREC draws students are Valdosta, Lowndes County, Berrien County (in Nashville, GA), Cook County (Adel, GA), Lanier County (in Lakeland, GA), Echols County (in Statenville, GA), and Brooks County (in Quitman, GA). The consortium consisted of five local colleges and universities: Valdosta State University (VSU), Waycross College, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), South Georgia College, and Bainbridge College. The administrative aspects of the consortium are handled through SGC. Students receive VSU ID cards and are encouraged to participate in some of the extracurricular activities and organizations provided by VSU, in addition to receiving access to its academic facilities, such as the Odum Library and the computer labs. The SGREC has involved to what it is today, the SGCEP (South Georgia College Entry Program). The SGCEP continues to provide the students of our service area with the same excellent preparation. The SGCEP is located at the VSU University Center, on Patterson and Ann streets. Based on the success of the SGCEP, we are now developing an Entry Program with the cooperation of Georgia Southwestern University on the Americus campus.
