Certainly the experience will enrich learning in areas of study such as renaissance art and life 2000 years ago, but the same is true for many other areas of study. Just as important is the change that the experience will have on a student's perspective, which will be dramatically expanded. Study abroad programs give students the opportunity to see the world from a totally different viewpoint -- from outside the United States. As part of its commitment to educating students "of and for the world", the college firmly believes that its students should have the opportunity to study abroad. At SGC students are exposed to the world via course-work, global virtual faculty, and extracurricular activities. These activities bring the world to us; it is equally important for us to go out to the world and experience it first-hand. There is a big difference between being told about the world versus actually seeing and experiencing it. This web site provides students and faculty with information about locales for study abroad and logistics for making it possible to experience what might be the most significant part of an education at SGC. Upcoming programs for 2007!China Study Abroad Program accepting applications for world travelersIf you’ve ever dreamt of scaling the Great Wall of China, browsing the open markets of Beijing, or practicing martial arts at a Shaolin temple, the China study abroad program will make that dream a reality. Students interested in learning about Chinese culture can apply to the four-week Summer Study in China Program from May 8 – June 5, 2007. Jointly sponsored between Valdosta State University and Dalton State College, the program will allow students to study at Zhengzhou University in the capitol of the Henan province. The goal of the program is to open the minds of students to a new culture and way of life. Participants will discover the social, economic, and political system of the People’s Republic of China through both classroom lectures and visits to historic sites in Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’an. They will also visit the homes of several Chinese families to understand the domestic lifestyle of the average Chinese citizen. The 2007 program will offer courses in philosophy, history, political science, and communication, all of which are taught in English by American professors. In addition to these credit courses, students can also take non-credit courses in Chinese language, painting, calligraphy, Tai Chi, and other cultural humanities free of charge. Additionally, students can participate in a comprehensive six-week program of the Chinese language following their study at Zhengzhou University. The cost to attend this program is $3,290, which includes round-trip airfare, admissions to museums and attractions, most meals on campus, and accommodations in the host cities. Tuition, book fees and other travel expenses must be paid for separately by the enrolled student. Anyone interested in traveling to China should contact Dr. Carl McDonald at 912.260.4203 or at carl.mcdonald@sgc.edu. South Georgia History on the Study Abroad ProgramMartha Johnson and Dr. Carl McDonald developed the first study abroad program in the University System of Georiga specifically for students from two-year colleges. They traveled to London and set up the program in partnership with the American Institute for Foreign Study. The program became part of a two-year college study abroad collaborative which eventually included only SGC, Darton College, and Middle Georgia College. Once the University System established the Office of International Education. Now almost every institution has a study abroad program.
